New Offices to Cut Waits for Claims
By Susan Tompor, Free Press ColumnistAugust 10, 2010: Michigan residents who face some of the worst waits nationwide when appealing a Social Security disability claim may see some relief soon with the opening of two new offices and a satellite facility in the state.
Social Security Commissioner Michael Astrue cut a ribbon Monday to open a hearing office in Livonia. Astrue said another will open by month's end in Mt. Pleasant and a satellite office will open in Marquette next spring.
The Livonia office, staffed by 10 administrative law judges and 45 support staff, will serve primarily residents of Livonia, Inkster, Ann Arbor, Farmington Hills and some parts of Detroit and Pontiac, as well as areas of Oakland, Wayne and Washtenaw counties.
